COS Education Course - Now Available

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The Chamber of Shipping is pleased to announce a new education course developed by local industry professionals and endorsed by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.  The first one-day course is scheduled for April 16, 2009 and registrations are now being accepted - please note space is limited.

Backgrounder:

With a view to responding to industry feedback, in September 2008 the Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia (COS) established an Education Committee comprising a small group of industry professionals.

From the outset, the objective of the committee was to build a platform for maritime business education having the potential to add value and knowledge within our industry. The target audience is persons working in all sectors of our industry who seek to broaden their knowledge base.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, it was decided to approach the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) in London who have long offered their Tutorship Correspondence Course “Business of Shipping” as a vehicle to qualification as a member of the Institute.

ICS generously offered to support our initiative by allowing us to build updated and Canadian relevant modules on their standard course.

We are pleased to advise that the COS Education Committee designed course content has been approved by ICS London and will importantly be offered with ICS formal endorsement. In this context we wish to also acknowledge the support and encouragement received from ICS Canada Branch.

An initial pilot course of one day in duration will be held on April 16 2009 at SFU downtown campus.

The course entitled “Business of Shipping” will comprise four modules with presenters as indicated:

Module 1: History of Trade and Shipping - Trends in Trade
Keith Moger (Western Stevedoring Co. Ltd. ) & Stephen Brown (Chamber of Shipping)

Module 2: Common Ship Types - Operations - Sale and Purchase
Stephen Pyne (Montship Inc.) & Bernie Jones (CTL Westrans Shipbrokers)

Module 3: Chartering and Logistics - Legal and Insurance
Daryl Raibl (CTL Westrans Shipbrokers) & Peter Swanson (Bernard & Partners)

Module 4: Case Study Voyage – Group Exercise
George Adams (Consultant)

We are targeting a mix of industry representation. Registration will be therefore subject to confirmation. For those having interest, please complete the attached registration form. Course fee is $150 + GST payable in advance ($100 + GST for ICS members and registered students) Fee will include a continental breakfast, sandwich lunch and coffee breaks. Course duration 08:30 – 5:00pm, Registration & light breakfast at 08:00am.

Additional courses will be arranged to meet demand. Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation form which will provide us with valuable feedback.

It is intended that the program of one day pilot courses will be the prelude to COS development of a permanent education program including in depth courses covering specific areas of maritime industry knowledge. A modified course will also be offered at regular intervals to those who may be considering a career in our industry.
